Questions & Answers
Q. Question? How long would this take any one got any good diet plans or tips i'm not really into exercise so say I did 30 mins of cardio a day what would I need to eat to lose it quickly?

A. Best Answer: Diet is key, although exercise is important too, You say you don't want to do much, but 30 mins of cardio a day would equal 3 1/2 hours of exercise a week. You could do much more productive exercising with this time allowance (or even less time).

Losing 1-2lbs a week is the best way to go. This way, you are losing mostly fat, rather than water and muscle. Faster weight loss is not better, nor is it sustainable.

Diet should be what you look at first for weight loss- this is what will enable you to drop fat. Try a balanced diet made up of mostly natural whole foods, with high protein, moderate carbs and moderate fats.

You need to know how many calories you burn- you can use an online calculator for a rough estimate. Aim for 10-20% calories fewer than you burn daily (too large a deficit will be counterproductive in the longer term).

Don't worry about complicated diets or cutting things out. You can enjoy anything in moderation, as long as the majority of your diet is healthy.

Base your meals around:

Lean protein (e.g. chicken, tuna, lean beef, fat-free cottage cheese, egg whites)
Wholegrains (e.g. wholewheat bread, oats, bran cereals, rice)
Healthy fats (e.g. nuts, seeds, olive oil, avocado, salmon, whole eggs, flaxseed)
Fruit and veg

And drink lots of water.

Second in importance to diet, is heavy resistance training- this is what will allow you to preserve muscle so you look 'toned' and defined once you've dropped the fat (rather than just a smaller version of how you look now, with the same bits you're unhappy with). More muscle also means a higher metabolism, so you definitely want to hold on to, or increase the muscle base you have, for fat loss.

You need to work ALL your major muscle groups- you can't spot reduce.

Do this sort of training 3-4 times a week. A good place to start could be:
-Three days a week doing full-body workouts. Leave at least a day between each workout.
-OR four days a week alternating upper and lower body. Don't work out more than two days in a row if possible.

Then you can look at extras like cardio to help create a calorie deficit. But cardio is by far the least important of these three, and you can lose fat effectively without it.

Make sure you're getting at least one rest day a week with no exercise at all.

Focus on losing inches/dress sizes rather than actual scale weight- it's how slim you look that matters, not how little you weigh.

Q. Question? I am ashamed to say that at nearly forty years old and weighing 16stone 10lbs (or 234pounds) I am over 8 stone (or 100 pounds) overweight for my height. I have decided to do something about it for health reasons and I started a few days ago by doing an hour of exercise everyday.I do a five minute warm up slow walk on the treadmill, I then do twenty minutes of power walking on the treadmill but every five minutes I do 30 seconds of running (all I can manage at the moment!) I then do a five minute cool down walk. I follow that up with twenty minutes of a toning dvd and then ten minutes of pilates (which nearly kills me!)

My question is this,is this enough? I am really tired and sweating by the end of it so I am not sure I could manage anymore but to seriously lose weight is an hour a day enough? I am receiving conflicting views, my friend who is in a similar position says I should be doing two hours a day, the problem is every time I try this, I get bored/tired/sick of it and I give up,the thought of an hour a day feels achievable and this is something I want to commit to for life,my brother who is a champion bodybuilder says this is enough as a slow weight loss is better,he also recommends no dieting and instead uses portion control with the emphasis on healthy eating but a small amount of what you fancy, I again find this easier to stick to than any diet, as I eat when I am hungry, eat whatever I like but just make a conscious effort to finish when I am full (even if this is after a few bites) and am finding this so much easier to stick to than any diet I have ever done (and there has been millions!)

So again is an hour a day enough for serious weight loss and then maintaining it or should I be doing two? Also, although I realize a slow weight loss is healthier and better, my daughter gets married in eight weeks, can I expect to see a difference by then with an hour a day of exercise? Is my exercise plan right? I am confused with all the conflicting info both from people and on the internet.

A. Best Answer: An hour a day is enough, do as much as you can cope with and commit to it as you said.

But you need to change what you do in a that hour.

As your main goal is to loose weight, find a routine that is achievable and maximises what you burn in that hour, for this i would get some help a some professional advice.

If you can keep this up you will get to the stage where it becomes a lot easier, this is where you intensify your workout. But make sure that you will be able to continue.

REMEMBER don't worry about the intensity and duration too much when you start up, the important thing is that you persist and don't give up.

good luck.

Q. Question? At easter I'm going home from uni for 4 weeks - now I've been going to the gym 3-4 times a week whilst I've been at uni. When I get home, there isn't a gym nearby and we don't have any home gym equipment. I can't do road running due to a medical condition as it is too high impact but walking is ok. What can I do to either maintain my weight loss over the holidays or at least maintain my current weight for the time being?

A. Best Answer: I'd look into plyometrics circuits. If you google it, you'll find a whole range of stuff you can do at home. If you have medical issues, be sure to take it at your own pace and build up slowly.

The main thing you need to keep in check for weight loss/maintenance is diet.

Q. Question? A couple of months ago I weighed 115 pounds, I know I am not overweight and I could lose about 15 pounds and still be within the healthy range, but I do have a little jpudge on my upper thighs and belly and I am feeling self concious because all my 90-100 pound friends can get away with wearing bikini's on the beach while I am always covering myself up with a towel. I decided to exersize and asked my mum if she could help me and she got me started with some company weight loss challenge with her friends (that are obese/overwieght). I having been forcing myself to eat their meals and protein shakes and bars over the past two weeks whilst I have been doing yoga and walking to school and I found I have gained weight and am now 122!! :( Sorry I don't mean to whine but is there a guideline somewhere or something for people who are not overweight to lose weight healthily without starving themselves??!!

(please don't label me as anorexic I am trying to be healthy as possible and I am doing this for myself an my self confidence)

Thankyou :)

(I'm 17 btw)

A. Best Answer: it depends on your height to see if your underweight, healthy, or overweight. the bmi is wrong when it comes to being overweight, because 5lbs of muscles is 5 times smaller then 5lbs of fat. people with muscles will weight more and be healthier, but appear smaller then someone who is fat. go to the gym or doctor to get a body fat % test to see if your in a healthy body fat % range. dont even worry about the cellulite and rolls, so many people have them, and still show them off. dont think about it, just enjoy your time with your friends and be confident. if there nice friends, your cellulite and fat wont bother them. but its not wrong to want to loose extra body fat, as long as your not underfat, it's good to loose fat. its good to be healthy and strong, so build muscles. muscles make you look the best also.

your probally gaining weight on your obese's friend's diet, beacuse they are obese, they need more calories to function! they are exersize less and eating more beacuse the bigger you are, the more calories you need. you need to have a program that is fit for you, not them.
drink 2+cups water per hour. eat 6+times per day, 1-2hours apart. eat accoring to this link http://www.mypyramid.gov/pyramid/index.html dont worry about looseing weight, just worry about looseing a little fat and gaining muscles. so do 2+hours high intesity exersize per day, cardio and strength training.

Q. Question? if i was to have a proper breakfast and then a small salad for lunch and dinner without snaks in between how long would it be before i noticed a significant weight loss?

A. Best Answer: Well that seems to be pretty good plan...I think you should see first results after about 2 weeks !!!

GOOD LUCK !!!

Q. Question? Hey, I'm 16, male, 6'2.5" and about 14-14.5 stone. How long will it take to have noticeable weight loss and a more toned body? What exercises will I need to do (at home) to achieve this also?

A. Best Answer: You can lose about 1-2 pounds per week so within a couple of months you should have noticeable weight loss. Try things like running, doing aerobics, swimming, using a jump rope at home and also doing exercises like crunches hip lifts russian twists squats push ups pull ups and lunges to help improve muscle tone.

Q. Question? I've done the Weight Watchers plan before however i am now stuck in a bit of a rut so i thought i would try Slimming World to see if this helps get my weight loss back on track. I was hoping for some idea about how much it is to join and per week to attend my local meeting. Only serious answers please - i am trying to lose weight and keep it off. Thank you for your help.

A. Best Answer: At the moment, membership is FREE! It's £4.95 a week, but this can be less if you buy a package of weeks as you get 12 for the price of 10 or 6 for the price of five. I go regularly, and have lost a stone this time around, previously I lost a lot more then stopped going. The secret to keeping it off, I have found the hard way, is to keep going, especially as when you hit your chosen target it's free as long as you stay within 3lbs.

Take a look here http://www.slimmingworld.com/ for more information - Good luck!

Q. Question? I know its about vomiting and trying to make yourself feel in control/ coping, I'm just trying to get a better background on it seeing as I know a few people who might have it

1) how often do people vomit?
2) Do they lose a lot of weight
3) After researching a little, I saw that bulimics are classed as people that vomit after binging, however if you don't binge at all and hardly eat, but still threw up, would that cause a weight loss?
4) How can it damage you
5) How to know if someone suffers from it?

thankyou so much for any information you can give me

A. Best Answer: The amount people purge can vary from person to person.

With weight loss, again, it depends on the person- everyone's bodies are different and work differently so some may lose a lot of weight, whereas some may retain weight more. It is generally thoughts that bulimics don't lose as much weight as anorexics- however this may not always be the case. Weight loss is simply a symptom of an eating disorder, some people lose a lot and some don't- it's impossible to generalise really.

I'm not sure about your 3rd question- i suppose it would though. If what you do eat is then thrown up it would eventually cause weight loss i'd imagine, though there may be a period of time when the body goes into 'starvation mode' and retains.

Bulimia can damage people in so many ways...both physically and psychologically/emotionally...

-Physical: Dehydration, Electrolyte imbalances which can lead to Cardiac arrest, Irregular heartbeats and death, Ulcers, Constipation, Enlarged glands in the neck (causing people to look 'puffy'), Scars on the back of hands/fingers, Tooth loss/loss of tooth enamel, Weight fluctuations, Irregular or loss of menstrual cycle, Hair thinning, Dizziness, Tingling hands and feet, Water retention, Lethargy, Blood shot eyes.

-Psychological/emotional: obviously this will vary depending on each person and their circumstances, but a few: Depression, Low self esteem, Isolation, Lack of motivation, Hopelessness, Mood swings, Loss of concentration...etc etc...

It's not easy to tell if someone suffers from an eating disorder as many people may look completely fine and 'normal', however some signs might be: Always using the bathroom after eating- being anxious to get away, Tension/anxiety around meal times and eating, Noticing significant binges and/or periods of starving or restriction, Puffyness in eyes and face, Looking bloated, Seeming overly controlling/interested in food nutrition, Eating alone/refusing to eat in front of others.

Often eating disorders will cross over into one another and people may exhibit many behaviours from both anorexia, bulimia and binge eating.
Also, it's important to remember that there is a form of bulimia in which the sufferer does not purge (hence its name: Non-purging bulimia). Instead of vomiting after eating/binging, they may compensate by over exercising, self harming or starving themselves/severely restricting instead.

Hope this helped a bit.
